Curious about the coaching profession?

Coaching is a profession that makes a difference in the life of every client, creating positive, far-reaching ripples like a pebble in a pond. If you want to help others, make a significant impact, or find work with deep meaning, coaching can be a wonderful career. It is, however, a career that requires careful planning and a clear idea of what to expect.

What to consider before starting

  • Before starting, a good approach is to get fully informed about the profession. Consider the financial and time commitment of your coach education, the effort of potentially running a business, and the skills needed to market your services.

  • For more information on approximate costs, payment plans, and opportunities, see our detailed FAQ section on coach training.

How to choose a program

Choosing a coach education program is a big decision and it's important to find one that is the right fit for you. With potentially hundreds of programs to select from, it can be overwhelming. Here are some considerations:

  • Your goals: What motivates you to become a coach? Your reasons will help you narrow down your training options.

  • The program's style: Does the program's mission and values speak to you? Do you feel you can connect with its approach?

  • The quality of education: What is the cost, length, and structure of the program? Is the program accredited by international standards? Is the faculty credentialed, with extensive experience in both educating and coaching?

Understanding Credentials & Certification

  • As a professional, obtaining an International Coaching Federation (ICF) Credential is important to validate your training and experience. The ICF is the largest global regulatory organization for coaches, and it has established clear standards for the profession. Here are some key terms to understand.

  • Credentialing:  Credentialing pertains to an individual coach and validates the coach's training, knowledge and experience.  ICF has 3 Credentials. In order to achieve an ICF credential, the applicant must demonstrate their level of knowledge of the ICF Core Competencies. Most organizations rely on the ICF credentials when hiring coaches.   As a professional, you want to demonstrate to potential clients that you are serious about your work, and have the backing of ICF to prove it.

  • Certification: This is a certificate issued by an accredited training program (like Radiance) to a graduate that proves they've completed all program requirements. A certification can greatly streamline the process of applying for an ICF credential.

  • Accreditation: This is the ICF's approval of a coach training program. Radiance offers ICF-accredited programs, which means our training has passed a rigorous oversight process.
